Common Zipper Problems & Solutions

Loose Zipper Slider
When the slider loosens, the teeth won’t stay together.

Fix:

  • Gently pinch each side of the slider with needle-nose pliers to tighten its grip on the teeth.
  • Squeeze a little, test the zipper, then repeat as needed. Avoid over-tightening!

Cracked, Bent, or Broken Slider
If the slider is damaged, it will need to be replaced.

Steps:

  • Use pliers to open the sides of the old slider and remove it.
  • Slide a new slider onto the zipper teeth.
  • Gently squeeze it into place with pliers.
  • Make sure the new slider is centered and moves smoothly.

Stuck Zipper
If the slider won’t move, it may just need lubrication.

Try:

  • Rubbing pencil graphite onto the teeth, or
  • Using a small amount of lubricant like WD-40
  • Move the slider slowly back and forth to loosen it.

Bent or Worn Teeth
Bent or worn teeth can prevent a zipper from closing properly.

Fix:

  • Use pliers to gently straighten any bent teeth.
  • If many teeth are damaged or missing, replacing the entire zipper may be the best option.
