Common Zipper Problems & Solutions
Loose Zipper Slider
When the slider loosens, the teeth won’t stay together.
Fix:
- Gently pinch each side of the slider with needle-nose pliers to tighten its grip on the teeth.
- Squeeze a little, test the zipper, then repeat as needed. Avoid over-tightening!
Cracked, Bent, or Broken Slider
If the slider is damaged, it will need to be replaced.
Steps:
- Use pliers to open the sides of the old slider and remove it.
- Slide a new slider onto the zipper teeth.
- Gently squeeze it into place with pliers.
- Make sure the new slider is centered and moves smoothly.
Stuck Zipper
If the slider won’t move, it may just need lubrication.
Try:
- Rubbing pencil graphite onto the teeth, or
- Using a small amount of lubricant like WD-40
- Move the slider slowly back and forth to loosen it.
Bent or Worn Teeth
Bent or worn teeth can prevent a zipper from closing properly.
Fix:
- Use pliers to gently straighten any bent teeth.
- If many teeth are damaged or missing, replacing the entire zipper may be the best option.
