Bulb Won’t Turn On (and It’s Not the Bulb)

If a lamp or light fixture flickers, works inconsistently, or won’t turn on at all, the problem isn’t always the bulb. Often, the issue is a worn, dirty, or poorly contacting socket. This is common in lamps that use standard screw-in bulbs, including LED bulbs.

1: Rule Out the Bulb

  • Test the bulb in another lamp or socket you know works.
  • If it doesn’t light there, the bulb is faulty.
  • If it works elsewhere, the issue is likely the socket or fixture.

2: Confirm the Fixture Has Power

If the bulb works in another lamp but not the original fixture:

  • Make sure the lamp is plugged in and switched on
  • Check the outlet (try another device)
  • Check your circuit breaker for a trip
  • If the fixture doesn’t appear to be receiving power, stop here and contact a qualified electrician.

3: Inspect the Socket (power off first!)

  • Unplug the lamp or turn off power at the breaker before inspecting the socket.
  • Inside most screw-in lamp sockets is a small metal contact at the center (sometimes called the center contact or hot contact). It touches the base of the bulb to complete the connection.

Look for:

  • A flattened center contact
  • Dust, debris, or corrosion inside the socket
  • Visible damage

4: Gently Adjust the Center Contact (make sure the power is off!)
If the center contact looks flattened, use a non-conductive tool (wood or plastic) to lift it slightly. Don’t force it.

5: Clean the Socket and Fixture
Dust and residue can interfere with contact. Use a dry cloth or soft brush to clean the socket opening and make sure the bulb can seat fully.

Do not continue if you notice:

  • Burn marks or scorching
  • Cracked or brittle socket material
  • Loose internal parts that won’t stay in place

If the lamp still doesn’t work after trying the steps above then the socket likely needs to be replaced rather than adjusted. If you’re not comfortable doing that yourself, bring the lamp to a future Repair event and one of our volunteer fixers can take a look!
